Climate:
The North island of New Zealand receives subtropical temperatures whilst the South island is generally cooler. New Zealand 's seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere with four definite seasons, Spring (Sept - Nov), Summer (Dec - Feb), Autumn (Mar - May) and Winter (Jun - Aug). During winter the temperatures can reach freezing and snow is common in the south island upon high ground.
Clothing:
In keeping with New Zealand 's lifestyle, dress is informal on most occasions. Even in the smarter restaurants men are generally not expected to wear formal suits, although you may prefer to take a jacket and tie. Due to the ever changeable climate, it is advisable to pack both lightweight cottons and warm clothing, preferably dressing in layers particularly during the Autumn/Winter period. Comfortable shoes and a light raincoat/umbrella would be advisable as rain can be expected at any time of year. In addition most of the hotels have self service guest laundry facilities at a small additional cost, alternatively, hotels offer a laundry service.
Currency & Money Matters:
New Zealand currency comprises of New Zealand dollars and cents. We recommend that any money taken should be mainly in travellers cheques for security. (If you have difficulty obtaining New Zealand dollar travellers cheques, sterling would be the next best currency). A small amount of New Zealand dollars would be useful for drinks etc. before you are able to exchange money locally. Currency can be converted at banks, hotels, and foreign exchanges. All major international credit cards are acceptable and ATM's are widely available.

Visitors over 17 are allowed duty free: 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco or 50 cigars; 4.5 litres of wine or beer and one 1125 ml of spirits or liqueur. Tipping:
New Zealanders generally expect tips or gratuities of approximately 10% of your restaurant/bar bill. Journeys of Distinction are frequently asked for guidelines on gratuities for the Tour Manager and Driver/Guide, therefore, depending on the standard of service given and your level of satisfaction, we recommend a £1.50 per person per day for your Tour Manager and £1.50 per person per touring day for your Driver/Guide. These recommendations are guidelines only. As tips are a personal matter and purely down to your discretion , we suggest they are given on an individual basis rather than as a group collection. All hotel porterage is taken care of by Journeys of Distinction.
