Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart Heathrow

Your overnight flight to Beijing departs today travelling via Paris or Frankfurt.

Day 2 – Arrive Beijing

This afternoon you’ll arrive into China’s capital and check into the Holiday Inn Express Temple of Heaven Hotel for 4 nights. Later enjoy this evening’s welcome group dinner.

Day 3 – Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Summer Palace

Today you’ll enjoy a full day tour of Beijing’s most impressive historical buildings. You’ll visit the huge Tiananmen Square, the world’s largest public square, featuring the imposing Great Hall of the People, Chairman Mao’s mausoleum and the huge city gates. You’ll continue under the famous Tiananmen Gate and Mao’s huge portrait to enter The Forbidden City. Closed to the outside world for centuries, this extensive collection of palaces and temples was home to the Emperors of China. After lunch you’ll travel to the Summer Palace - the largest and bestpreserved imperial garden in China. Here you’ll explore the tranquil lakes, pavilions and courtyards before returning to the city centre and dinner.

Day 4 – The Great Wall of China

This morning you’ll head out for an unforgettable experience at the Great Wall of China. You’ll visit the Badaling area which was built in 1505 during the Ming period and is one of the best preserved sections. Originally a military defence against hoards of invaders, the wall remains one of the country’s greatest cultural icons. After lunch you’ll visit a jade workshop to observe craftsmen at work. On the way back into the city for dinner, you’ll pass the famous Birds Nest Stadium, site of the 2008 Beijing  Olympics.

Day 5 – Temple of Heaven and The Hutongs

Today you’ll visit the 15th century Temple of Heaven. Full of symbolism and set in beautiful gardens, this is where locals practice tai chi, dance and chat with family and friends. You’ll also explore Qianmen, a pedestrianised shopping area. After a traditional Beijing noodle lunch, you’ll continue to The Hutongs for a walking tour. This traditional area of Beijing features picturesque old houses, alleyways and courtyards. Much of the area was demolished to make way for modern life, but it’s now a protected area preserving traditional Chinese culture.

Day 6 – Depart Beijing

Today you return to Beijing airport for your flight home, arriving later the same day, or connect to Xian or Shanghai to begin your prebookable extension.
